The Highly Anticipated Fake News Awards

By Sohil Apte

There are the Emmys, the Grammys, the Tonys, the Oscars, The Golden Globes and The Academy Awards.Though winning one of the aforementioned awards is good and a potential resume booster for the recipient, nothing even comes close to the honor that is bestowed upon the winner of the Highly Anticipated Fake News Awards. However, in the midst of a government shutdown and an ongoing investigation on the President’s collusion with Russia, it was uncertain on weather or not the President would even have time to follow through with his promise. Let me rephrase. Everyone was hoping, that that the President had more pressing issues occurring than just declaring the winners to an award ceremony fabricated in his mind.

As our President is a man of honor as well as a man of his word, he took a break from being a racist and referring to African nations as “shithole countries” and released a list of the winners of the “ 2017 Fake News Awards”. Although the Fake News Awards were “Highly Anticipated”, they were quite frankly underwhelming. The GOP website, containing the Fake News Awards gives a disclaimer before the winners are announced. It reads “2017 was a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage, and even downright fake news. Studies have shown that over 90% of the media’s coverage of President Trump is negative.” This remark, is incriminating in itself as it shows that the only reason Trump is doing these bogus awards is due to his blatant insecurities from his short but rough start in office. If 90% of the media is criticizing the President's actions, in Trump's mind, it’s more reasonable, as well as beneficial to his ego to believe that 90% of the press is fake news rather than true the list only consisted of 11 “fake news” stories from CNN, the Washington Post, and the “Failing New-York Times” followed by a list of simply 10 things that the President has done in his 1 year service (Most of which he had no actual hand in doing). “But who was #1” you ask. Who had the honor of being the fake news champion, an icon to his fake news followers. At #1… it was “The New York Times’ Paul Krugman who claimed on the day of President Trump’s historic, landslide victory that the economy would never recover.”

The fakest of news of 2017… was an editorial in the New York Times. Yes, it is true, our President has now began to render opinions as fake news. It sure does make me excited for the 3 years to come.
