It was a muggy Monday evening as the Lady Bulldogs of Canton High School took on the Sharon Eagles in a Davenport division clash.

 Canton came into the game fresh off a 3-3 draw against Milford and was looking to gain some ground on current leader of the Davenport division, North Attleboro.

The game got off to a relatively pedestrian pace with neither team able to gain an edge on their opponent.

“It took us a while to get things going” said senior forward Lilah Sullivan before adding “…but we definitely ended on a high note”

The few Eagle chances that did arise were thwarted largely due to great play on the defensive end, led by Sarah Connolly (Sr.), Carly Hutchinson (Sr.), Sarah Collins (Jr.), and Leianne Brune (Jr.).  A couple of nice plays by senior goalkeeper Lindsey Barrett also played a role in the first half shutout.

On the offensive end the Bulldogs were able to gain some momentum as the half went along; particularly finding success in bringing the ball up the sidelines. But despite a couple decent chances they were unable to find the back of the net leaving the score 0-0 after 40 minutes of play.

The second half was when things got interesting.

The Bulldogs struck first as forward Olivia Rodman (Fr.) banged home the go ahead goal off of a nice feed from Lilah Sullivan (Sr.) midway through the second half.

However, Sharon was quick to respond with a goal of their own off a juicy rebound in front of the net to tie the game at 1 goal apiece.

Canton reacted well to the adversity and once again took control of the pace of play and generated some excellent chances. Unfortunately for them they just couldn’t seem to capitalize and with only stoppage time left, it seemed as though they would have to settle for a draw.

But right as both teams prepared for the final whistle, Elisa Diletizia (Fr.) was able to sneak behind the Sharon Defense and buried the game winning goal off a feed from Riley Duserick (Sr.).

“Elisa did a great job of getting the goal to win it” said senior Kendra Farrelly (who was sidelined with an ankle injury) adding that both Diletizia and Rodman have had a great impact despite being only freshmen. “They are both great play-makers and are really just great players who complement each other at the forward spot”.

The goal proved to be the difference as Canton sent the hometown fans happy with a 2-1 victory.

With the win, Canton improves to second place in the Davenport division (2-2-2) as the Eagles continue their search for their first win of the season (0-6).

Despite the slow start to the game this was one of the more exciting games I’ve seen from the girls’ team.

I’m a guy who lives for dramatics, so a game winning goal in stoppage time had me feeling like a kid in a candy shop.

As for the student section, it was a surprisingly decent turnout for a Monday night after a long day at the office (School). Not the best effort from the Stoody in the first half but when things got crucial Bulldog nation showed up; so let’s get to some awards.

Ben is admittedly not the most outspoken kid in the world, but when someone can claim their “finsta” as their “rinsta” you know that’s a kid who has got a one liner or two in them. In short, I don’t want Ben at more games; I need it!

In all seriousness I think I need to get hearing aids after that.  My family in Australia called me to make sure I was inside sheltered from the chaos of all crime being legal for the next 24 hours.

Disclaimer; my family actually lives in Western Mass. but who really knows where that is, right?
